Streaks And Smears After Cleaning

The glass looked clean while wet, then dried covered in streaks, smears or cloudy patches.

What's happening?

Streaks are not dirt you missed: they are something left behind. Almost every domestic window cleaning method puts a film on the glass: washing-up liquid leaves surfactant, tap water leaves dissolved minerals, and a used cloth leaves lint and grease. While the pane is wet that film is invisible. As it dries it draws together into the lines and cloudy patches you can see against the light. The second big cause is order of work: dirt sitting in the frame rebate, on the sill and along the top drip bead washes down onto glass you have already finished. Professional results come from removing the film rather than polishing it, which is why a pure water system rinses instead of buffing.

What usually causes it?

  • Washing-up liquid or a general-purpose spray leaving a surfactant film that dries into lines
  • Cleaning with hard tap water, so dissolved calcium and magnesium dry on the glass
  • A nicked, hardened or dirty squeegee rubber dragging a line at each pass
  • Working in direct sun or wind, so the pane dries before it can be pulled clean
  • Dirt from the frame, sill or top drip bead running down onto finished glass
  • A cloth or microfibre carrying fabric softener, lint or grease from earlier jobs
  • Old silicone, polish or an aftermarket coating breaking down and smearing when wet

Is it dangerous?

Streaks themselves are cosmetic. The real risk on this job is the access, not the glass: falls from height remain one of the biggest causes of serious workplace injury in the UK, and a domestic ladder on a soft lawn or a stair landing is exactly the setup HSE warns about. If the pane you keep re-doing is above ground-floor level, stop re-climbing to chase a smear.

Can I fix it myself?

Ground-floor glass, yes. Wash with clean warm water and the smallest amount of detergent that shifts the dirt, do the frame, sill and top bead first, then rinse and pull the pane down with a clean squeegee in overlapping strokes, drying the blade between each. Work in shade or on an overcast day. Never use a scouring pad, a scraper on dry glass, or a bathroom limescale gel: all three can leave permanent marks. If streaks survive a genuinely clean rinse, the film is on the glass rather than in your water.

When should you call a window cleaner?

Call a window cleaner when the glass is above the ground floor, when a conservatory or bay puts you on a roof or a ladder over a sloping surface, or when streaks come back no matter how you wash: that points to a residue or a surface problem you cannot rinse away with tap water. A pure water pole system reaches upper floors from the ground, which removes both the streaking and the ladder.

What will the window cleaner actually do?

  • Detail the frame, rebate, sill and top drip bead first so nothing washes back onto clean glass
  • Wash with a soft brush and deionised or reverse-osmosis water that leaves no mineral residue
  • Rinse the pane and leave it to dry without buffing, or squeegee with a fresh rubber on traditional work
  • Identify whether the marks are residue, mineral staining or surface damage and say which will not come off
  • Reach upper floors from the ground with a water-fed pole rather than working off a ladder
  • Clear the sill, and the rubber gasket line where dirt collects and reseeds the glass

Who fixes this

Questions people ask

Why do my windows look worse after I clean them?

Because you have spread a film rather than removed one. Detergent and hard tap water both dry into visible lines, and a dirty cloth adds grease and lint. Rinsing with clean water and leaving the pane to dry unbuffed usually looks better than polishing.

Is newspaper better than a cloth?

Modern newspaper is not the tool it was: the ink and coatings differ from the 1950s print people remember, and it shreds when wet. A clean squeegee with a good rubber, or a rinse with pure water, gives a more reliable finish.

What is a pure water pole and why does it not streak?

Water is filtered through reverse osmosis or a deioniser until effectively nothing is dissolved in it. With no minerals and no detergent in the water, there is nothing left on the pane when it dries, so it needs no drying off, and the pole reaches upper windows from the ground.

Should windows be cleaned in the sun?

No. Heat dries the pane before you can pull the water off, which is one of the most common reasons a job that looked perfect wet dries streaky. Shade or an overcast day gives a better result.
