What's happening?

Most of England sits in a hard or very hard water area, meaning the mains supply carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When a droplet of that water sits on glass and evaporates (from a sprinkler, a leaking gutter, a downpipe splash, or a hose rinse) the minerals stay behind as a white ring. Left alone through repeated wet-and-dry cycles, the deposit hardens and begins to bond to the silica in the glass surface. Early staining is a surface scale that a professional can dissolve and remove. Long-term staining etches the glass, and at that point nothing cleans it because the damage is in the pane, not on it. The difference matters: one is a cleaning job, the other is a glass replacement.

What usually causes it?

  • Hard mains water drying on the glass after a hose rinse or a garden sprinkler
  • A blocked or leaking gutter dripping mineral-laden water down the pane for months
  • Splash-back from a downpipe, a patio or a flat roof outlet onto low glass
  • Rain running over concrete, render or a new-build lintel and carrying lime onto the glass
  • Sea spray or wind-driven salt on coastal properties bonding with dust on the pane
  • Mineral deposits allowed to build through repeated wet-and-dry cycles until they etch the surface
  • Ceramic hob cleaner, abrasive pads or limescale gels used on glass, which cloud rather than clear it

Is it dangerous?

No. Mineral staining is a cosmetic and value issue, not a safety one. The only real hazard is what people reach for: bathroom limescale removers and abrasive pads permanently haze glass, and hydrofluoric-based glass restorers are severely corrosive to skin. If a bottle needs gloves and ventilation, it does not belong on a domestic window on a whim.

Can I fix it myself?

You can test how deep it goes. Wet the pane and look along it at a low angle: if the marks vanish when wet and return as it dries, they are surface deposits and are treatable. If they stay visible while the glass is soaking wet, the surface is etched and cleaning will not recover it. For light spotting on ground-floor glass, white vinegar diluted in warm water, left to dwell and then rinsed thoroughly, lifts fresh deposits. Do not use a scraper, a scouring pad, a drill-mounted polisher or a limescale gel: these are the usual reason a window ends up worse.

When should you call a window cleaner?

Call a window cleaner before you experiment. They will tell you within a minute whether the staining is surface scale or etching, and treating it early is the only cheap outcome. Also call if the cause is still running: a leaking gutter or a misaimed sprinkler will re-stain a restored pane within one season, so the water needs redirecting as well as the glass cleaning.

What will the window cleaner actually do?

  • Test whether the marks disappear under water, to separate surface scale from permanent etching
  • Dissolve fresh mineral deposits with an appropriate acidic glass cleaner and a full rinse, not an abrasive
  • Use a graded, non-abrasive glass restoration compound on hardened deposits where the pane is still sound
  • Rinse with deionised water so the cleaning itself leaves no new mineral film
  • Identify the water source (gutter, downpipe, sprinkler, splash-back), and say what needs redirecting
  • Tell you honestly when a pane is etched beyond cleaning, so you are not paying to restore glass that cannot be restored

Questions people ask

Can hard water permanently damage glass?

Yes. Left through enough wet-and-dry cycles, the mineral deposit bonds to and etches the silica surface. Etched glass cannot be cleaned back: the surface itself is altered. This is why fresh spotting is worth treating rather than living with.

How do I tell surface scale from etching?

Soak the pane. Surface deposits vanish while the glass is wet and reappear as it dries. Etching stays visible even under water, because the mark is in the glass rather than on it.

Will a limescale spray from the bathroom work?

No. Household limescale gels are formulated for ceramic and chrome and commonly haze or streak glass permanently. They are one of the most frequent causes of a window that looked marked and ends up ruined.

Is my area hard water?

Most of central, southern and eastern England is hard or very hard; much of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the south-west is soft. The Drinking Water Inspectorate publishes a hardness map, and your water company states the hardness for your postcode.
